Artist Kelly Freas Photographed for "The Artist Within"

Sampsel Preston Studio Blog:  Happy Birthday to Kelly Freas, Jack  "King" Kirby, and Don Perlin!       RIP:Russ Heath

Okay, Blog time again! It's been slow at the studio, August is generally our slowest month, year after year. Sharon is out of town for a couple days, but she did mention before she left that I should write something about the studio in the blog, OR ELSE! She has been making threats about taking over the blog,

but alas , she is out of town, (cue maniacal laughter) so...

Wow, It's been another crazy week, too much going on! First, a bunch of Birthdays! Happy Birthday to one of Science Fiction's great illustrators, Frank Kelly Freas, (above) Born on this day 1922. Kelly was an "American Science Fiction and Fantasy Artist artist with a career spanning more than 50 years. He was known as the "Dean of Science Fiction Artists" and he was the second artist inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame." I was able to photograph Kelly with his better half Laura Brodian Freas a number of years ago for my book project "The Artist Within".

Happy Birthday Jack "King" Kirby!

And Tomorrow, July 28th we celebrate the Birthday of the Amazing Jack Kirby! Of course Jack with Artist and writer Joe Simon Created Captain America, and along with Stan Lee was the creator of the majority of the Marvel Comics Universe! Yeah!!!

Jack was one of the first three artists that I photographed for "The Artist Within book project!

from wikipedia-"Jack Kirby was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor, widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. During the 1940s, Kirby, regularly teamed with Simon, creating numerous characters for that company and for National Comics Publications, later to become DC Comics.

After serving in the European Theater in World War II, Kirby produced work for DC, Harvey Comics, Hillman Periodicals, and other publishers. At Crestwood Publications, he and Simon created the genre of romance comics and later founded their own short-lived comic company, Mainline Publications. Kirby was involved in Timely's 1950s iteration, Atlas Comics, which in the next decade became Marvel. There, in the 1960s, Kirby and writer-editor Stan Lee co-created many of the company's major characters, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk. The Lee–Kirby titles garnered high sales and critical acclaim, At DC, Kirby created his Fourth World saga, which spanned several comics titles.

In his later years, Kirby, who has been called "the William Blake of comics", began receiving great recognition in the mainstream press for his career accomplishments, and in 1987 he was one of the three inaugural inductees of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. In 2017, Kirby was posthumously named a Disney Legend with Lee for their co-creations not only in the field of publishing, but also because those creations formed the basis for Walt Disney Company's financially and critically successful media franchise; the Marvel Cinematic Universe.and he is known as "The King" among comics fans for his many influential contributions to the medium."

Comic Book Artist Russ Heath Photographed in hi studio

Russ Heath

And Sadly this week we lost another one of the great comic book artists, Russ Heath! Russ Passed a few days ago, August 23. Russ Heath was "best known for his comic book work, particularly his DC Comics war stories and his 1960s art for Playboy magazine's "Little Annie Fanny" feature. He has also produced commercial art, two pieces of which, depicting Roman and Revolutionary War battle scenes for toy soldier sets, became familiar pieces of Americana after gracing the back covers of countless comic books from the early 1960s to early 1970s.

Heath's drawings of fighter jets in DC Comics' All-American Men of War #89 (Feb. 1962) served as the basis for pop artist Roy Lichtenstein's best-known oil paintings.

Heath was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009."-from wikipedia
