Portrait of Cartoonist/ Car Designer Ed "Big Daddy" Roth photographed in his custom car shop in Manti, Utah

Remembering Amazing Cartoonist/ Car Designer Ed "Big Daddy" Roth on his Birthday, yep, that's today!

Remembering Cartoonist/ Custom Car Designer Ed "Big Daddy" Roth on his Birthday today (March 4, 1932 – April 4, 2001). As I'm pretty sure most people know Ed Roth "was an artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper and custom car designer and builder who created the hot rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s." -wikipedia

I was honored to be able to include Ed Roth in my book project, actually both books of "The Artist Within".

It was kind of a magical day, starting early in the morning and making the 6 hour drive out to what seemed like the middle of nowhere Utah, and finding his home garage shop. Of course I had been a fan since I was a little kid collecting his model kits, and he was bigger than life, he could not have been a nicer guy. The car in the portrait was the last one he built in an amazing string of beautiful Hot Rods. We spent most of the day shooting, and when we were finished I offered to buy dinner. It turns out that there was no restaurants in Manti, so we made the 20 minute drive to the next small town where there was a McDonalds, his favorite go-to place, and had dinner there. Just the best day ever!

You can see more of Ed's work on his website here:
