Remembering Animation Legend Iwao Takamoto on his Birthday, April 29!

Remembering Animation Legend Iwao Takamoto, (April 29, 1925 – January 8, 2007) on his Birthday. If his name is not familiar to you, you most certainly know the work.

Iwao, "first learned his animation chops during his teenage years, while a prisoner in the Manzanar internment camp". At the end of the war, he took the portfolio that he had created and was able to get a job at the Disney animation studios where he became the key assistant to one of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men, Milt Kahl, working on such classic films as Cinderella, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians. In 1961 Takamoto joined Hanna-Barbera where he worked as an animator and character designer, and went on to create the lovable but clumsy "Scooby-Doo" for the TV series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, He also contributed to such TV cartoons as The Flintstones and The Jetsons, (he also created "Astro"), eventually assuming the role of Creative Producer, which allowed him to help shape the future of the company. He continued in that role at Hanna-Barbera until his retirement in 2001. Takamoto’s last big production was the successful feature film Charlotte’s Web (1973). The Animation Guild honored him with its Golden Award in 2005.

This is a portrait that we made in his studio for "The Artist Within" Book 2".

A nice memory: while we were there, he asked if I had kids, and if it would be okay to send along drawings for them, of course I said "well sure"! We received them in the mail a couple weeks later, the boys were over the moon.
