Artist/Illustrator/Caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, Photographed in his Manhattan Studio.

Remembering Amazing Caricaturist/Illustrator Al Hirschfeld on his Birthday, June 21st!

Today, Remembering legendary artist Al Hirschfeld on his Birthday. As everyone knows, Hirschfeld was an Amazing "Caricaturist best known for his incredible black and white, pen and ink portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. I had the chance to photograph Mr Hirschfeld in his Manhattan studio back in 2002, just a few months before his passing at age 99. What I didn't realize then, it seemed that no one had ever photographed Mr. Hirschfeld standing? (at least as far as I can tell) According to Margo Feiden, who owned the Hirschfeld Gallery in New York, she had known and worked with him for over 25 years and had never seen him stand, and didn't think he could. (He was usually photographed sitting in his barber chair). Of course no one had thought to mentioned this to me, so as the shoot was winding down, I asked him if he would get up and stand in a certain spot, and he said sure and got up walked over and stood where I pointed and we shot the last few shots. Color me embarrassed, I probably should have done more research... Anyway, Happy Birthday Mr. Hirschfeld!
