Remembering Futurist/Designer Syd Mead on his Birthday today, (July 18, 1933 – December 30, 2019).

"Syd Mead was an American industrial designer and neo-futuristic concept artist, widely known for his designs for science-fiction films such as Blade Runner, Aliens and Tron. Mead has been described as "the artist who illustrates the future" and "one of the most influential concept artists and industrial designers of our time."-wikipedia

"Syd was born in St. Paul Minnesota, July 18th, 1933. Moving frequently throughout the western United States, he graduated from High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1951. After serving in the army, Syd went on to graduate from "The Art Center School" with great distinction in 1959, and was immediately recruited by the Ford Motor Company’s Advanced Styling Studio under the management of Elwood Engle. He left after 2 years in order to accept a variety of assignments, including for United States Steel, Celanese, Allis Chalmers and Phillips Electronics.

In 1979, the motion picture industry recognized his unique ability to “visualize” the future. His work can be seen in such feature films as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Blade Runner, TRON, 2010, Short Circuit, Aliens, Time Cop, Johnny Mnemonic, “MP-3” and most recently, “Tomorrowland” for which he did pre-production art for director Brad Bird. In 2016 the Visual Effects Society awarded Syd their top honor reaffirming his title of “Visual Futurist” by his peers and the industry.

Syd has done concept and design work for Sony, Minolta, Dentsu, Dyflex, Tiger, Seibu, Mitsukoshi, Bandai, NHK and Honda. He also created designs for two Japanese toy icons, “The New Yamato” and all eight robot characters in the new Turn-A Gundam mobile suite series which are also seen as characters in Television shows."-the artist within

One of the many highlights of working on "The Artist Within" portrait project was having the chance to meet and spend a good part of the day hanging out with Syd Mead and Roger Servick at their Pasadena home studio, and being able to make some portraits, a huge thank you to Leonard Pederson and Scott Gandell for assisting help on the shoot, and here are two of the portraits, Syd liked the one taken in front of the mural in his living room, I liked the one in his studio, check them out!
