Happy Saturday, June 12th, today, remembering Comic Book Artist/ Cartoonist Dave Berg on his birthday, June 12, 1920 – May 17, 2002. Of course Dave Berg was "one of Mad magazine’s best-known writer-artists, whose slice-of-life cartoon strips “The Lighter Side of ...” were one of the humor magazine’s most popular features for more than 40 years".-LA Times
Before his amazing run in Mad Magazine, Dave " did work for multiple comic book companies. In the early 1940's, most of his comic book work was done for the Timely/Marvel/Atlas group, edited by Stan Lee. His most notable work came as a writer/artist /editor on Marvel's war feature, 'Combat Kelly'.-lambiek
But it was not until he moved to Mad magazine in 1956 that his work got wide recognition, with "The Lighter Side".
Early on in my "Artist Within" portrait project, I had the chance to meet with and make this portrait of Dave in his Marina Del Rey studio.
Before making the trip to visit him, someone had mentioned to me that he could be somewhat temperamental, so I was a little nervous, well, he could not have been more kind, and patient with me while I worked out the shot, he was totally into the process. As we were shooting Dave picked up a copy of Mad magazine that was on his desk, and did this pose, It was perfect! I loved that his portrait on the back of the magazine matched the pose we were working on.
